Michael Gove remains determined to go to Rhodes tomorrow despite wildfires

According to critics, the Government’s response to the fires on Rhodes has been sluggish.

When asked about the perceived lack of urgency from the Foreign Office, Mr. Gove responded, “No, I don’t believe so. We have already dispatched a team of experts and provided humanitarian assistance to Rhodes.”

“The travel companies have also been responsible, and the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office has the necessary expertise to closely monitor the situation,” he added.

The current Foreign Office advisory for Rhodes advises travelers to consult with their travel operator or hotel before visiting areas affected by wildfires. However, it does not offer explicit guidance on whether to proceed with planned trips.

Mr. Gove’s remarks coincided with the ongoing repatriation flights bringing British holidaymakers back to the UK from Rhodes. Many of them were forced to seek shelter in schools, airports, and sports centers after parts of the popular Greek island were engulfed in flames.

Foreign Office Minister, Andrew Mitchell, estimated on Monday morning that there were approximately 10,000 Britons still on the island.
