Michael Gove cautions against turning net zero into a ‘religious crusade’

In light of the impending petrol car ban, Mr Gove acknowledges that while he cannot determine if the target is perfectly calibrated, he believes it is achievable.

Mr Gove’s stance is noteworthy, as he is the first of Rishi Sunak’s Cabinet ministers to publicly advocate for a relaxation of certain measures. He also warns of the repercussions of proceeding with unpopular initiatives during a time of rising living costs.

What gives Mr Gove’s intervention added significance is the fact that, during his tenure as environment secretary under Theresa May, he championed the initial inclusion of the 2050 deadline in the law without questioning its validity.

In an upcoming speech on Monday, Mr Gove will unveil a comprehensive long-term housing plan, countering Labour’s claims that the Conservatives have failed to address the housing crisis.

He states, “We, as a party, strive to ensure livable, walkable urban renewal in our cities, which is where aspiring homeowners often aspire to reside.”

In contrast, the Housing Secretary accuses Labour of promoting “suburban sprawl” and advocating for the encroachment of green belts.

The plan will involve establishing a new generation of government-sponsored development corporations in cities throughout the country. These corporations will purchase land using compulsory purchase orders and sell sections to developers for the construction of new homes, with appropriate planning permissions.

Furthermore, the government will introduce a “planning supersquad” known as the Action Taskforce for Land Assembly Sites. They will also review permitted development rights to facilitate the conversion of shops and agricultural buildings into residential properties.
