Miami (Ohio) Secures MAC Championship with 23-14 Victory over No. 23 Toledo

Rashad Amos scored two touchdowns and Graham Nicholson kicked three field goals to lead Miami (Ohio) to a 23-14 victory over No. 23 Toledo in the Mid-American Conference championship game on Saturday.

This was the RedHawks’ first MAC title win since 2019 and their 11th win in a single season since 2003.

Miami’s defense and special teams played a key role throughout the game, with Amos sealing the win with a 10-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

“It’s pretty special. We got it done for him (Gabbert) for sure,” said Miami’s replacement quarterback, Aveon Smith, reflecting on the team’s victory.

Nicholson, who has made a field goal in all 13 games this season, saw his streak of 25 straight field goals end when his 48-yard try was wide left with 5:58 left in the third quarter, marking his first miss all season.

Miami’s defense held Toledo’s Peny Boone in check for most of the game, limiting him to 41 yards rushing. Toledo’s coach, Jason Candle, acknowledged the pressure posed by Miami’s special teams unit in the game.

The RedHawks and Rockets will soon learn where they will be headed for bowl games, as the MAC has six bowl-eligible teams but no automatic qualifiers for a specific bowl.
