Chiefs’ Mitch Holthus Breaks Long Broadcasting Streak: What Happened on Sunday Night?

Longtime Kansas City Chiefs radio broadcaster Mitch Holthus’ streak of 503 consecutive Kansas City games came to an end on Sunday night.

Holthus missed the Chiefs’ game at the Green Bay Packers after testing positive for COVID on Friday.

Ari Wolfe, who called the Chiefs’ preseason games, filled in for radio play-by-play duties.

In a statement on his social media account, Holthus, who has been in the Chiefs’ booth for 30 years, expressed his disappointment at missing the game and thanked everyone who tried to find a solution for him to still broadcast the game safely.

He mentioned, “2023 protocol calls for 5-day quarantine. I appreciate EVERYONE who spent most of the day Friday trying to figure out how I could broadcast this game 2020 studio style & if it was a home game, could maybe have had isolated booth. But no way to pull it off on road-and would NEVER put ANYONE in that travel party in jeopardy-especially those who are immune compromised.”

Despite the setback, Holthus, who previously called Kansas State football and basketball games, remained hopeful and stated, “We will start a new streak next week!”
