Mets’ Struggles Continue to Spiral in Defeat against Brewers

In a disappointing turn of events for Mets fans, the team followed up a dismal road trip with a 2-1 loss to the Brewers at Citi Field. This loss marked their fifth in the last six games and their 16th loss out of 21, as they continue to struggle despite high expectations for the season.

On Monday night, Justin Verlander delivered five scoreless innings, but it took him 100 pitches to achieve this feat. He was replaced at the start of the sixth inning. Drew Smith, who had recently returned from a 10-game suspension for violating the league’s sticky substance policy, entered the game with a one-run lead. Unfortunately, he gave up a two-run homer to Joey Wiemer, propelling the Brewers into the lead. This loss cannot be solely attributed to one aspect of the team, as Buck Showalter mentioned before the game.

The offense failed to produce against right-hander Colin Rea, managing to score only one run. This lone run was aided by an error from catcher William Contreras. Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil expressed his frustration after flying out in the seventh inning.

Verlander had a shaky start in the first inning, loading the bases with one out. However, he was able to escape without allowing a run. Rea retired the first eight batters he faced, with the Mets finally securing their first hit against him in the fourth inning. Starling Marte’s single kick-started the team’s offense, leading to the game’s first run when Francisco Lindor hit a sacrifice fly.

Milwaukee had their chances to score but struggled with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-11. Verlander faced some trouble in the fifth inning but managed to retire the next three batters. The Mets couldn’t find a way to overcome the Brewers’ bullpen.

Looking ahead, the Mets will have a tough challenge in their next game against Julio Teheran. Teheran has had success against the Mets throughout his career, boasting a 2.98 ERA over 29 games and a remarkable 2.40 career ERA in 14 starts at Citi Field.
