The New York Mets faced an unexpected rainout on a night that saw very little rainfall.
Unfortunately, due to the deemed “unplayable field conditions” at Citi Field, the Mets’ series-opener against the Marlins had to be rescheduled as a single-admission doubleheader on Wednesday, starting at 4:10 p.m.
Over the weekend and into Tuesday, the area experienced significant rainfall from the remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia, though the rain had ceased by late afternoon.
Once the rain stopped, the grounds crew tackled the task of fixing up an infield that appeared rather rough.
Before the decision to postpone the game, a group consisting of manager Buck Showalter and Marlins GM Kim Ng toured the field to assess the conditions.
The Marlins, who are currently vying for a playoff spot and dealing with a shortage of pitchers, were likely unhappy about having to play a doubleheader on Wednesday.
The Mets addressed the situation in a statement, saying, “Due to the significance of the game for the Marlins, every effort was made to make the field playable for tonight.”
Tickets for Tuesday’s game will not be valid for the rescheduled doubleheader.
Fans holding tickets for Tuesday’s game will receive a digital voucher that can be exchanged for a ticket of similar value for another game this season or next season.
