Meta threatens termination for employees who disregard 3-day-per-week office rule

Mark Zuckerberg’s company, Meta, has issued a strong statement to its employees regarding office attendance. In an email from Lori Goler, known as Meta’s “head of people,” employees were reminded that starting September 5, individuals assigned to an office must spend a minimum of three days per week in person. The purpose behind this requirement is to encourage healthy relationships and effective collaboration.

Goler stated in the memo, obtained by Insider, that managers will review badge and Status Tool information on a monthly basis to ensure compliance. Failure to meet the requirement could result in disciplinary action, including a drop in performance rating and even termination if the issue remains unaddressed. This is in line with Meta’s ongoing efforts to optimize efficiency as ordered by Zuckerberg himself, who aims to streamline operations and reduce costs. As part of these measures, approximately 21,000 layoffs have been implemented, equating to about 25% of the workforce of Meta’s parent company, Facebook and Instagram.

It’s important to note that the return-to-work attendance directive applies solely to Meta employees assigned to a specific office. Remote workers have been instructed not to visit the office more than four days every two months unless there is a clear business reason. Acknowledging the importance of distributed work in the future, a Meta spokesperson emphasized that the current emphasis on in-person work is intended to provide a valuable experience for those who have chosen to work from the office.

Meta’s financial results and the cost-saving initiatives implemented by Zuckerberg have positively impacted the company’s shares, which have risen over 120% since the start of the year. Following a challenging 2022, investors are enthusiastic about Meta’s trajectory. In June, Meta announced that most employees would be required to work from an office at least three days per week, though remote employees would be unaffected.

Zuckerberg previously encouraged employees in March to spend more time in the office, citing performance data that indicated better average performance among engineers who either started in person and transitioned to remote work or remained in person. Meta is not the only major tech company implementing a return-to-office plan. Amazon faced criticism after sending an email to employees expressing concerns about some individuals not meeting the expectation of working in an assigned office for at least three days per week. The email sparked outrage and led to a mass walkout by disgruntled corporate staffers who took issue with the company’s attendance requirement and climate policies.
