Mercenary Group’s Control May Soon Be Taken Over by Wagner Group, as Boss Responds to Russian Military

On June 11, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Russian mercenary force Wagner Group, responded to Russia’s Defense Ministry and its plans to take control of the mercenary forces. In a statement posted on Telegram by his company, Prigozhin stated that Wagner Group will not sign any contracts with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. He further claimed that most Russian military units do not have the battlefield efficiency of Wagner forces because “Shoigu cannot manage military formations normally” and instead scrawls orders and decrees. Prigozhin also made it clear that the Wagner Group remains subordinate to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the will of the country. Meanwhile, the Russian military is stepping up its recruitment efforts, with over 13,500 contracts being accepted in the first 10 days of June. Deputy Defense Minister Nikolai Pankov stated that “volunteer formations” will be asked to sign contracts directly with the military, but legal issues regarding these formations must be addressed. Pankov did not directly name the Wagner Group in his comments.
