Two young individuals suspected of robbing a mailman in Menifee and then engaging in a police pursuit that culminated in a crash are now in custody as of Wednesday.
The incident took place at around 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday in the 28400 block of Cathedral Street near Canterbury Street, according to officials from the Menifee Police Department.
Spokesperson Chase Coburn stated that a mail carrier, whose identity remains undisclosed, was carrying out a delivery in a residential area when he was confronted by two juveniles wielding a firearm. The culprits demanded both the mailman’s personal belongings and the mail itself.
The victim complied with the robbers’ demands, after which they fled in a Kia Optima, according to Coburn.
Coburn further mentioned that the mail carrier provided a description of the suspects and their getaway car, which the Menifee police officers broadcasted to other law enforcement agencies in the vicinity.
About three hours later, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office spotted the vehicle just outside of Menifee. They attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the suspects chose to ignore the patrol unit and fled back into Menifee, as Coburn alleged.
The police spokesman stated, “The pursuit eventually came to an end with a minor collision involving another vehicle at the intersection of McCall Boulevard and Briggs Road.”
The individuals inside the vehicle struck by the suspects sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the scene. Fortunately, hospitalization was not required.
Coburn added that the two suspects, whose identities have not been disclosed, emerged unscathed from the incident. Deputies and police officers apprehended them without any further complications.
The suspects have been placed in custody at Riverside Juvenile Hall on suspicion of armed robbery. No additional information is available about the pair at this time.
Menifee police are collaborating with inspectors from the U.S. Postal Service to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
