Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s TikTok Presence Takes a Troubling Turn

Prince Harry, 38, and Meghan Markle, 42, have become the center of attention on TikTok, but unfortunately, the conversation surrounding them is predominantly negative, according to recent research conducted by Hootsuite on behalf of Newsweek. Eileen Kwok, a social marketing specialist at Hootsuite, revealed that most people are highly critical of their relationship. TikTokers often compare Markle and Harry to Prince William and Kate Middleton, both 41, leading to heated debates in the comment sections of videos about the royal family. The study, which analyzed 30 days worth of data on TikTok, showed that there were nearly equal numbers of posts about the royal subjects, totaling 6,000 for William, Harry, and Markle, and 5,000 for Middleton. However, Harry had the highest number of posts specifically about him, at 140,000, with 13 billion views. Markle had 115,000 posts with 11 billion views, while William had 79,000 posts with 11 billion views, and Middleton had 65,000 posts with 10 billion views. The research also examined the popular search terms associated with each royal family member. Middleton’s included terms like “tennis,” “rude,” “paparazzi,” and “coronation,” while Markle’s included “divorce,” “Prince Harry,” “being rude,” “narcissistic,” and “awkward.” Kwok commented that the data suggests that the TikTok audience tends to search for negative behavior related to Markle. Interestingly, the most-liked videos about Markle on TikTok were positive, posted by the account for the now-canceled Ellen DeGeneres daytime show. However, the following videos took a negative tone toward Markle and were created by fans. When it comes to Middleton, the most-liked video showcased her at Wimbledon and was posted by The Independent’s account. Kwok mentioned that TikTok users enjoy comparing the two couples but generally seem to favor Kate. The top search terms for Harry included “Meghan,” “divorce,” “court case,” and “audiobook.” Videos featuring clips of Harry with Queen Elizabeth, rumors of divorce with Meghan, conspiracy theories about their relationship, and clips of him with Princess Diana ranked highly on TikTok. William, on the other hand, is portrayed positively on social media, with keywords such as “young” and “Kate” associated with him on TikTok. Many videos about William highlight his dedication as a father or his relationship with Middleton. The Post reached out to representatives for Kensington Palace and The Sussexes for comment, but no response has been received yet.
