Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are set to meet in Sochi on Monday to discuss the revival of the Black Sea Grain Initiative. They aim to resume the agreement that facilitated the export of Ukrainian grain to developing nations. This meeting holds potential for a new deal to be negotiated between the two leaders.

However, the Kremlin has made it clear that any new agreement must also provide benefits for Russia. Putin expressed openness to negotiations on the grain deal and acknowledged Erdogan’s intention to discuss it during their meeting. Erdogan has expressed optimism about the outcome and teased a significant announcement related to a possible grain corridor.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative was suspended seven weeks ago, prompting criticism from the international community. Russia accused Ukraine of failing to fulfill promises made in exchange for allowing shipping vessels through its sea blockade. As the meeting takes place, Ukraine has claimed that Russia targeted key port infrastructure over the weekend, with reports of drone attacks on the southern Odesa region and the Danube River. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has continuously advocated for the safe export of grain and foodstuff from Ukraine and has sent proposals to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to facilitate the resumption of the grain deal.

Aside from the grain deal, Putin confirmed that he and Erdogan will also discuss the ongoing civil war in Syria, a sensitive issue for Turkey. The meeting will address various bilateral and international issues, with a focus on regional security.
