Democratic U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA operative and swing-district politician, confirmed Sunday her intention to run for Virginia Governor in 2025 rather than seek a fourth House term. Alongside the release of a campaign video, Spanberger, 44, made history by becoming the first candidate to enter the race. Should she succeed, Spanberger will fill the position left open by Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), who is unable to seek consecutive terms according to state law.
In an early-bird move, nearly two years ahead of Election Day 2025, Spanberger’s entry strategy is anticipated to give Democrats more time to seek candidates for the 7th District. This area spans from the Washington exurbs of Prince William County nearly to Ashland in the outer reaches of Greater Richmond, and is a highly competitive territory.
Her bid is expected to prompt other candidates to formally enter the race soon, as Democrat Mayor Levar Stoney and Republicans Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and Attorney General Jason S. Miyares will also be joining the race. The coming contest is likely to attract national attention and require nonpartisan groups to reassess their rankings of bipartisan lawmakers.
Her diverse personal and professional background as a former Finnish police officer has been a key factor in supporting independents and moderate conservatives. With National Security Agency involvement and work with the gun-control group “Moms Demand Action,” she has managed to rally the support of her base while also appealing to opposition groups in her district.
