Scott Glen has over 25 years of experience as a professional stock dog handler and trainer.
Growing up on a farm near Pincher Creek, Alta., Glen’s family raised cattle and ranch dogs that were not expected to assist with work tasks. However, his interest in training stock dogs began when he started raising sheep.
“When I went to a demonstration to learn how to sheer them, I saw a fellow doing Border Collie demonstrations and I was hooked,” said Glen.
Since then, Glen and his dogs have earned numerous competitive titles, including being a six-time USBCHA National Champion, four-time Canadian Champion, Meeker Champion, Bluegrass Champion, Soldier Hollow gold and silver medalist, and a multi-year World Trial Competitor.
“I won my first National in 2004. I was the first Canadian to ever do that,” Glen proudly stated.
Recently, Glen competed in the 2023 World Sheep Dog Trials in Ireland with his dog, Pip, and placed third in the finals out of 240 dogs from around the world.
“The worlds – that was probably the pinnacle of my career because no North American has made it as far as I did this year,” Glen expressed.
Alice, also known as “The Queen,” is considered the most accomplished Border Collie in the history of trialing in North America, according to the ABCA.
“With any animal relationship, there are some that just gel perfectly, and she was one of them for me,” Glen shared. “She was my buddy, and we understood one another, even though we argued a little once in a while.”
This induction does not mean retirement is near for Glen.
“I’m running, I think, as good as I ever have now,” Glen affirmed. “Probably better.”
