Doctors Successfully Reattach Boy’s Head Following Traumatic Accident in Israel
In a remarkable medical feat, doctors in Israel have managed to reattach the head of a 12-year-old boy who was struck by a car while riding his bike. The young Palestinian, named Suleiman Hassan, hailing from the West Bank, suffered from internal decapitation, an extremely rare injury where the base of the skull becomes detached from the top of the spine while the skin remains intact. Suleiman’s head was found to be “almost completely detached from the base of his neck,” according to the doctors who performed the meticulous and time-consuming surgery. The fusion of the skull and spinal column using rods, screws, plates, and potentially bone grafts is a standard treatment for this injury.
Dr. Ohad Einav, one of the surgeons involved in the operation, exclaimed, “We fought for the boy’s life.” He credited their success to their expertise and the cutting-edge technology available in the operating room. Dr. Einav had recently returned from a fellowship in Toronto, where he had performed similar surgeries on adults, further enhancing his skills.
Following the surgery, Suleiman will undergo rehabilitation to regain movement in his neck. In a fortunate turn of events, he does not experience any neurological deficits, sensory impairments, or motor dysfunction. He can even walk without assistance. Suleiman has been discharged with a cervical splint, and his progress will continue to be closely monitored by his doctors.
Expressing his gratitude, Suleiman’s father, who stood by his son’s side throughout the recovery process, said, “I will thank you all my life for saving my dear only son. Bless you all. Thanks to you, he regained his life even when the odds were low and the danger was obvious. A review study from 2015 revealed that children are three times more likely to experience internal decapitation compared to adults.
