Medical license revoked for cosmetic surgeon who live-streamed procedures on TikTok

An Ohio plastic surgeon, known as Dr. Roxy in her practice “Roxy Plastic Surgery,” has been permanently banned from practicing medicine after livestreaming procedures on TikTok.

On Wednesday, the Ohio Medical Board made the decision to revoke Dr. Katharine Grawe’s license, noting that she had harmed patients by livestreaming their surgeries on the social media app. During the surgeries, Grawe would speak into a camera and answer viewer questions.

In November, Grawe’s license was initially suspended. However, during the board meeting on Wednesday, she appealed for leniency and expressed remorse for her actions. According to CBS Austin, she stated, “I ask you from the bottom of my heart to please consider my thoughts with an open mind. This has humbled me more than you can know. I am willing to change my social media practices, and I will never livestream a surgery again.”

Despite Grawe’s plea, one board member remained unmoved and criticized her lack of professionalism. The member stated, “We’ve seen an extreme lack of professionalism. Her posts are done as a marketing ploy. Dr. Grawe’s social media was more important to her than the lives of the patients she treated.”

Neither Grawe nor her lawyers have responded to inquiries from the Associated Press. Currently, Grawe’s TikTok account is set to private.

Perforated intestine

The Ohio Medical Board had previously warned Grawe about her actions in 2018, raising concerns about patient privacy and potential ethics violations. In a prior suspension notice, three of Grawe’s patients experienced severe complications and required intensive medical care following their surgeries. One patient had a perforated intestine, which was partially livestreamed on TikTok by Grawe. This patient suffered significant abdominal damage, bacterial infections, and loss of brain function due to toxins in her blood.

At the board meeting, a former patient named Mary Jenkins, who had undergone breast reconstructive surgery with Grawe after battling cancer, expressed relief at the decision. Jenkins told CBS Austin, “It’s finally over. That chapter in my life is finally over, but I will never forget.”

Although the Ohio state medical board’s actions only affect Grawe’s ability to practice in the state, the disciplinary actions will be reported to the National Practitioner Databank and posted online.
