Exciting news for sports fans! Warner Bros. Discovery is bringing sports to its streaming app, Max.

Starting from October 5th, Max will now offer a tier that features live sports events from TNT and TBS, two of Warner Bros. Discovery’s traditional TV networks. This coincides with the Major League Baseball postseason, which will be aired on TBS.

The sports add-on membership, known as the Bleacher Report Sports Add-On, will not only cover MLB but also NHL, NBA, NCAA March Madness, and U.S. soccer games. Max subscribers will have free access to this add-on until February 29th, after which it will be available at an additional cost of $9.99 per month.

Targeting a younger audience that prefers streaming services, Warner Bros. Discovery aims to make Max more appealing and profitable. Adding sports to the app under the Bleacher Report brand is part of this strategy, as reported by CNBC.

Various media companies are exploring different approaches to enhance the attractiveness and profitability of their streaming services. Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming segment has already shown profitability in the first half of this year, and the company expects this trend to continue throughout the year.

In the past year, Max has undergone several transformations and is now bolstering its content offerings for the fall season.

After the merger of Warner Bros. and Discovery, the streamer was rebranded as Max in May, merging the content from HBO Max and Discovery+ apps. Additionally, Max struck a deal with AMC Networks, featuring more than 200 episodes of recent shows from the cable TV network for two months, running through Halloween.

Sports and news have been highly anticipated additions to the app. During the company’s earnings call, CEO David Zaslav announced that these additions would happen soon. On September 27th, the app will introduce CNN Max, a 24/7 live news hub featuring top anchors from the network.

While Max’s price was increased earlier this year, it has remained unchanged since. Currently, the ad-free tier costs $15.99 per month, while the cheaper option with commercials is available for $9.99 per month. However, there is potential for further price increases in the future, according to company executives.

In addition to MLB’s postseason, the Max sports tier will offer 60 live NHL regular season games, 65 NBA regular season matchups, postseason games from both leagues, and exclusive content from Bleacher Report.
