Mass Illness Causes School to Cancel Classes Shortly After Start

Attendance at Kentucky’s Lee County School District dropped to 82% just a few days after the start of the school year on August 9. By Monday, it had fallen further to 81%, and 14 teachers had called out sick. As a result, classes were canceled on Tuesday and Wednesday, and remote learning was planned for Thursday and Friday. Extracurricular activities were also canceled to allow for thorough cleaning of the schools, as reported by NBC News. Within the first week and a half of school, almost one-fifth of the district’s approximately 900 students were affected by COVID-19, the flu, or strep throat.

The superintendent explains that they are taking the necessary precautions by sanitizing buses and buildings, while giving staff and students time to recover. The public health director for the Kentucky River District notes that there is an increasing number of COVID-19 cases across the seven counties. In Lee County, the attendance rate reached a level where it was deemed necessary to dismiss classes for the rest of the week. An official from the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department warns that the combination of the flu, RSV, and COVID-19 could lead to a challenging fall and winter. However, there is some positive news on the horizon, as a Hollywood studio has recently reinstated its mask mandate and there are new RSV protections available for newborns.
