Maruti Suzuki Faces Show Cause Notice from GST Authority – Learn More about the Case

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd recently received a show cause notice from the GST authority covering the period from July 2017 to August 2022, as stated in an exchange filing on Friday. This notice demands interest, penalty, and the appropriation of Rs 139 crore in taxes that have already been paid.

Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that it will respond to the Show Cause Notice before the Adjudicating Authority.

Despite this development, the notice will have no impact on the financial, operational, or any other activities of the company.

The automaker also shared news of a positive order it received from the High Court of Punjab and Haryana regarding a case with the Central Excise Department. The appeal involved a total tax and penalty amount of Rs 57.2 crore.

The department had filed appeals covering the period from June 2006 to March 2011 in relation to Input Service Credit on certain services. However, these appeals have now been dismissed.

Maruti Suzuki explained that the Central Excise Department had lodged appeals with the Hon’ble High Court of Punjab and Haryana against a previous Tribunal order from August 2016. The Tribunal order had been in favor of the company, allowing them to claim Input Service Credit on certain services, while dropping the penalty charges.

Similar to the earlier notice, the court’s decision will also have no impact on the financial, operational, or any other activities of the company.
