Marine Veteran Trevor Reed wounded while serving in Ukraine

Trevor Reed, an ex-U.S. Marine who spent three years in captivity in Russia before being released in April 2022 through a prisoner swap, has sustained injuries while engaged in combat in Ukraine, according to a confirmation from the State Department on Tuesday.

Deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel stated, “We have been informed that Trevor Reed was injured during his participation in fighting in Ukraine. An NGO has assisted in transporting Mr. Reed to Germany where he is currently undergoing medical treatment.”

Details regarding the circumstances of Reed’s injury have been scarce, although the Associated Press reported that the incident occurred several weeks ago.

The State Department has consistently advised American citizens against traveling to Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Patel further emphasized, “Since the war began, we have repeatedly cautioned U.S. citizens about the significant risks they face if they choose to travel to Ukraine, especially with the intention of participating in the fighting, including the potential for capture, death, or physical harm.”

He clarified that Reed was not acting on behalf of the U.S. government and that the United States is unable to assist in the evacuation of private American citizens from Ukraine.

Reed joins a growing list of Americans who have been injured while fighting for Kyiv. Since the initial Russian invasion in February 2022, multiple casualties among U.S. citizens have been confirmed.

Reed gained prominence when he was arrested in Moscow in 2019 for public intoxication and subsequently sentenced to a nine-year prison term in July 2020.

He was released in a prisoner exchange deal last year, with Konstantin Taroshenko, a Russian drug smuggler, being freed in return.
