Marcos: Surprisingly Strong Leader, Defying Misconceptions

Perched at the center, with a legion of national and local politicians surrounding him, the President maintained his composure and cool demeanor. Despite signs of fatigue, he remained focused throughout the hour-long briefing. Acting more like a school principal, he attentively listened to the advice and input from various officials in attendance. Unlike a domineering figure, President Marcos facilitated the discussion among the participants. The briefing focused on the persistent flooding crisis in Pampanga, and the President calmly directed questions and sought clarification from different individuals.

Suddenly, tensions escalated when former public works secretary Rogelio Singson proposed a water impounding system, similar to his successful project at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City. The local politico vehemently opposed the idea of impounding Candaba Swamp, expressing concern about the impact on farmers’ livelihoods. Pampanga Representative Anna York Bondoc made it clear she wouldn’t allow it. Calmly, President Marcos intervened, firmly but politely explaining the scientific and economic rationale behind Singson’s proposal. He reassured Rep. Bondoc that they had no intention of harming the farmers’ livelihoods in Candaba. Instead of resorting to populist tactics or bullying, the President articulately explained the proposal, showcasing his understanding of environmental science, surprising some in the audience. In a matter of minutes, President Marcos showed his presidential and authoritative qualities.

This episode offered a refreshing perspective on President Marcos, challenging preconceived notions about him before he took office. Disregarding the sensational rumors and slanderous comments from critics, it’s worth noting that even former president Rodrigo Duterte openly expressed his lack of admiration for Marcos, calling him a weak leader. Despite valid criticisms concerning his tenure, including historical distortion, “rebranding” projects, and a multibillion Maharlika sovereign wealth fund, the President has surpassed expectations in many areas, particularly foreign policy.

Unlike his predecessor, President Marcos has consistently taken a strong stance in defending the West Philippine Sea. While the former president echoed Beijing’s view, alienating our allies and empowering our rivals, President Marcos has unwaveringly stood up for our nation’s position. His firm commitment to the 2016 arbitral tribunal award victory, recognized by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, is commendable. Supported by individuals like Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez, and Commodore Jay Tarriela, the President has prioritized the rule of law in our region.

President Marcos has demonstrated that being tough doesn’t require adopting a strongman persona. However, it remains to be seen if this is a genuine signal of his leadership style for the entirety of his term.
