March Trial Date for Trump Ensures a Chaotic Political Situation

Amidst his lawyers fighting his previous election-related charges, Trump could potentially secure the Republican nomination for the 2024 election.

Forget the ides of March. The first week of March should be alarming.

Judge Tanya Chutkan declared today that the federal trial of former President Donald Trump, for his actions in undermining the 2020 election, will commence on March 4, 2024, with jury selection. Interestingly, this would coincide with Super Tuesday, a crucial day for the Republican primary when a significant number of delegates are up for grabs.

Thus, Trump stands the chance of becoming the presumptive GOP nominee for the 2024 presidential election at the very moment his legal team fights to defend him in court for his alleged attempt to manipulate the previous election. This unprecedented situation lacks an officially recognized term, but we can aptly describe it as an immense conundrum.

Judge Chutkan set the trial date two months later than requested by Special Counsel Jack Smith, but significantly earlier than the proposed date of April 2026 put forth by Trump’s defense attorneys. Smith recently obtained the indictment, which accuses Trump of four felonies, including conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy against rights. These charges arise from Trump’s prolonged efforts to remain in power despite his defeat to Joe Biden, culminating in the events of January 6.

Today’s hearing offered a glimpse of the contentious trial ahead. Judge Chutkan promptly rejected the argument put forth by Trump’s legal team, stating that a trial date should not hinge on a defendant’s personal and professional obligations. She emphasized that Mr. Trump, like any defendant, must accommodate the trial into his schedule. In response to claims that the case is excessively complex, the judge pointed out that it involves a single defendant and, despite its historical significance, does not appear overwhelmingly complicated.

As Trump’s defense attorney John Lauro vigorously opposed the prosecution’s suggested schedule, Judge Chutkan urged him to lower his intensity. Lauro denounced Smith’s proposal as a call for a spectacle rather than a swift trial. He asserted that Trump’s freedom and life were at stake, demanding adequate representation. Prosecutor Molly Gaston mocked Lauro’s argument, highlighting that Trump’s attorneys had previously dismissed the case as a rehashing of the work done by the House January 6 committee.

The March 4 date is still subject to change. Lauro mentioned his intention to file a motion to dismiss the case and to argue that Trump is entitled to executive immunity or is being selectively prosecuted. However, the current schedule presents an intriguing strategic dilemma for Trump: should he attempt further delays and potentially risk the trial running into the general-election campaign season, or would he prefer to expedite proceedings to capitalize on a potential acquittal or buy more time to spin a conviction?

Ironically, Trump consistently claims that the charges against him are an “election inference” orchestrated by Democrats aiming to impede his return to power. This irony becomes even more apparent considering that Trump is specifically charged with attempting to undermine the will of the voters. He demands leniency while engaging in his own unsavory tactics without restraint.

However, the alignment of Super Tuesday with the trial also presents another irony: evidence suggests that these indictments may be inadvertently boosting Trump’s popularity, at least in the
