Aug. 28 (UPI) — In an extraordinary turn of events, a man in New Jersey discovered a message in a bottle from Ireland and successfully connected with the woman who wrote it in the summer of 2019.
Frank Bolger from Wildwood was participating in a beach cleanup at 14th Street Beach with his wife, Karen, and their granddaughter, Autumn. During the cleanup, they stumbled upon the elusive message in a bottle.
The note, signed by “Aoife,” was dated July 17, 2019, and originated from Ireland. It contained the following message: “Greetings from Ireland! I have cast this bottle into the sea, hoping someone will discover it in the days to come. Maybe it will travel to Africa or Iceland! I will never know if someone finds it, but I truly hope it does!”
Bolger’s discovery quickly gained attention online, eventually reaching Aiofe Byrne, a resident of Bray, Ireland. Byrne was informed about the find by her father, who happened to see the news coverage.
Initially, Bolger was taken aback and had some reservations when Byrne reached out to him via email.
“I replied to her email, requesting pictures and writing samples,” Bolger revealed in an interview with WPVI-TV.
Byrne promptly provided the requested evidence, leaving Bolger convinced of her authenticity.
The author of the message expressed her excitement at learning that her bottle had been discovered so far from its origin.
“To be honest, I am quite obsessed, or rather, extremely fascinated by messages in bottles,” Byrne admitted.
