Man in DTLA Admits Guilt in Social Media Account Hacking Case

An individual residing in downtown Los Angeles has acknowledged guilt on Wednesday for committing fraud by seizing control of victims’ social media accounts to steal non-fungible tokens, cryptocurrency, and other digital assets.

Amir Golshan, a 24-year-old, has pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges, including unauthorized computer access to obtain information, wire fraud, and accessing a computer with the intent to defraud and acquire value, as stated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Golshan could potentially face a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, as well as fines and restitution amounting to $1.5 million, upon his sentencing on November 27, as revealed by prosecutors.

Throughout the duration of his scheme, Golshan utilized various methods to defraud numerous victims.

Between April 2019 and February of this year, Golshan employed various tactics such as Zelle merchant fraud, where he deceitfully offered fictitious services on social media; “SIM swapping” and taking control of social media accounts, allowing him to blackmail account holders and defraud additional individuals. He also impersonated Apple Inc. support staff to pilfer digital assets, as stated in his plea agreement.

“SIM swapping” refers to the fraudulent act of persuading a mobile carrier to transfer a cell phone number from the legitimate owner’s SIM card to one controlled by the perpetrator, without the owner’s consent.

Golshan has been in federal detention since he was arrested on February 2.
