Major Update Expected for COVID Vaccines

According to the AP, there are plans to make a significant change to the COVID-19 vaccines this fall. Currently, the vaccines still contain the original strain of the coronavirus, even though new mutated versions have emerged. The Food and Drug Administration’s scientific advisers announced on Thursday that the next round of shots in the US should only protect against the newest variants, specifically the XBB variant from the omicron family. The final decision will be made by the FDA. Vaccine manufacturers claim that they can have updated vaccines available within a few months, depending on the strain.

Dr. Peter Marks, the FDA’s vaccine chief, expressed concerns about the virus becoming a major concern next winter as the daylong meeting began. He stated, “We’re concerned that we may have another wave of COVID-19 during a time when the virus has further evolved, immunity of the population has waned further, and we move indoors for wintertime.” The FDA had previously informed Americans to expect an updated vaccine against COVID-19 in the fall, similar to the annual flu shot. Despite a significant portion of the population being infected or vaccinated, the coronavirus continues to produce new variants. (For more information, refer to the AP article.)
