Rapper Macklemore made headlines in July 2014 when he embarked on a thrilling underwater adventure in an OceanGate submersible, all in search of sharks.

This extraordinary dive was organized in collaboration with OceanGate’s philanthropic partner, the OceanGate Foundation, and was featured on Discovery Channel’s television series “Daily Planet” as showcased on OceanGate’s website.

For the expedition, OceanGate utilized its submersible named Antipodes, conducting the dive at Elliot Bay, Washington. According to OceanGate’s website, the Antipodes is capable of “shallow expeditions” and can explore depths of up to 305 meters (1,000 feet).

OceanGate’s website stated, “Our objective was to find the elusive sixgill sharks that roam the deep waters in Puget Sound and fulfill a lifelong dream and ambition of Macklemore, a devoted shark enthusiast.”

The entire expedition was documented by Discovery Channel and aired during their week-long programming event known as Shark Week, which took place on August 11, 2014.

In a promotional clip for the feature, Macklemore’s excitement was evident as he declared, “I’m actually going to be going down underwater, 400 feet. We are going to find some sixgill sharks.”

The survey expedition turned out to be a success, with Macklemore and the crew spotting a sixgill shark. The OceanGate team had strategically “sank a bait ball to a depth of over 400 feet two days prior to the dive” to attract marine life.

OceanGate and its CEO, Stockton Rush, have faced scrutiny following the disappearance of the firm’s Titan submersible during a dive to the Titanic shipwreck on June 18. Tragically, the US Coast Guard confirmed on June 22 that the Titan submersible likely imploded, resulting in the loss of all five passengers, including Rush himself.

Insider reached out to representatives of OceanGate for comment but did not receive an immediate response outside of regular business hours.
