Love Stemming from an Uncomfortable Elevator Encounter

Rosemary Kalonaros and Christena Pyle’s relationship began with an awkward elevator ride. They first met at Omnicom, an advertising firm in New York City, where they both worked. However, it wasn’t until Ms. Kalonaros switched departments and started working on the same floor as Ms. Pyle that they took notice of each other.

Despite working on separate teams, it took a month for them to have their first one-on-one conversation at a coworker’s farewell party. During that interaction, they felt a connection but couldn’t pinpoint what it was.

A few weeks later, they found themselves in an elevator together. They immediately struck up a conversation, talking incessantly. When the elevator doors opened, they realized they had forgotten to press a floor button because they were so captivated by each other.

That elevator ride was a pivotal moment for Ms. Kalonaros. She recalls it being the moment she became aware of her feelings for Ms. Pyle. However, it wasn’t until a company holiday party in December that their relationship progressed further. After hours of conversation, they shared their first kiss, a moment that felt straight out of a movie.

The next morning, Ms. Pyle brought an egg sandwich and black coffee, her idea of a hangover cure, to Ms. Kalonaros’s desk. She then asked her out for drinks later that night. They went to an American bistro called Lexington Brass, where the initial awkwardness between them dissipated.

Ms. Kalonaros currently holds the position of global director for growth and experience at Omnicom, having graduated from George Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in English. On the other hand, Ms. Pyle attended Western Michigan University before taking a break from her studies to appear on MTV’s “Road Rules: South Pacific” and “Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Inferno.” She later graduated from the University of South Florida and now works as the first chief equity officer at Dentsu, a Japanese marketing and advertising agency.

As their relationship progressed, conversations about marriage and children naturally arose. However, it wasn’t until the Covid-19 pandemic hit that their bond as a couple strengthened. They quarantined together in Ms. Kalonaros’s studio apartment for two weeks before her father suggested they move in with her family on Long Island. What was supposed to be a temporary arrangement turned into more than four months, solidifying their relationship.

In August 2021, they purchased a home in Long Beach, N.Y. Six months later, Ms. Pyle privately proposed to Ms. Kalonaros in a room adorned with their photos at the Allegria Hotel. After accepting the proposal, Ms. Kalonaros was led into another room filled with their loved ones to celebrate the joyous occasion. They referred to it as #GettingRosemarried.

A few months later, in August, Ms. Kalonaros returned the gesture by proposing back in their Long Beach home with a ring enclosed in a gilded oyster shell.

Coming out to their families about their sexualities wasn’t an easy process for the couple. They had never been in serious relationships with women before and had to navigate difficult conversations with their parents within the first year of dating each other. Initially, the reactions were challenging, with questions like “why didn’t we know sooner?” and a lack of immediate support. However, over time, both families eventually embraced their relationship, although Ms. Pyle’s mother is still on a journey towards full acceptance.

On July 25, the couple got married at the city clerk’s office in Manhattan, officiated by Michael McSweeney. They had already celebrated with a ceremony at the Garza Blanca Resort in Cancún, Mexico, attended by 113 guests. In place of her late father, Phillip Pyle walked Ms. Pyle down the aisle. The ceremony was led by Peter Sherman, a friend and former coworker, who read a heartfelt note Ms. Pyle wrote to him eight years ago. The note was then passed around for guests to read, symbolizing the support and love they received on their special day.

Overall, the couple’s relationship blossomed from a chance encounter in an elevator to a beautiful love story that overcame challenges and celebrated the bond they share with their chosen and blood families.
