Lotus Unveils the Emeya ‘Hyper GT’: The Future of Electric Vehicles

Lotus Reveals New Electric Hyper GT, the Emeya, to Compete with Tesla and Porsche

Simplify, then add lightness. This iconic phrase coined by Lotus founder, Colin Chapman, still holds true today as Lotus takes a new direction under Chinese ownership and develops into an electric vehicle brand. Lotus recently unveiled its third battery-powered model, the Emeya, a four-door hyper GT with nearly 900bhp that will rival Tesla’s Model S Plaid and the Porsche Taycan Turbo S starting next year.

The Emeya will join the ranks of Lotus’s all-electric lineup, following the footsteps of the Evija hypercar and the Eletre SUV. While detailed performance specifications have not been released yet, it is expected to have similar specifications as its larger SUV sibling. Sporting a sleek coupe-like design, the Emeya is likely to feature the same 102kWh battery and dual motors capable of producing up to 893bhp and 985Nm of torque.

This electric GT will feature a rear-wheel-drive motor powering the rear wheels, with an additional front motor and single-speed gearbox, resulting in a four-wheel-drive setup. With features like F1-style launch control and intelligent torque control, the Emeya is expected to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in just 2.78 seconds. While its top speed is expected to be over 155mph, it will likely be limited to preserve battery life.

When it comes to performance, the Emeya will face tough competition from Tesla and Porsche. Tesla’s Model S Plaid boasts a blistering 0-to-62mph time of 2.1 seconds and a top speed of 200mph, while Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 2.8 seconds with a top speed of 162mph.

The Emeya’s range has not yet been disclosed, but it is expected to be similar to the Eletre SUV’s range of up to 373 miles. Lotus claims the battery will have a recharge capability of up to 350kW, allowing for 93 miles of range to be added in just five minutes of charging. Charging from 10 to 80 percent is estimated to take approximately 18 minutes.

Styling-wise, the Emeya carries on the design language of Lotus’s next-generation EVs. Built with aerodynamics in mind, it features advanced active aero components, including an active front grille, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler that generates over 215kg of cornering downforce. Lotus’s innovative use of air channels, resembling the gaps between rocks, directs cool air flow to key components, such as the brakes, electric motors, and battery, to maintain optimal performance temperatures.

The Emeya will also showcase Lotus’s renowned ride and handling excellence, leveraging its low center of gravity and electronically controlled air suspension system to provide a smooth and responsive driving experience. The cabin offers ample space for both driver and passengers, with advanced materials consciously chosen to reduce the car’s carbon footprint. Additionally, the Emeya features a state-of-the-art 55-inch projected augmented reality head-up display and a cutting-edge audio system co-developed with KEF for an immersive driving experience.
