Lost Sub: OceanGate Co-founder Encourages Optimism Amid Search

The former CEO of OceanGate, the company that operated the submersible on the expedition to the Titanic, describes this as a critical day in the recovery efforts for the craft and the five people aboard.

However, shortly after his statement urging people to remain hopeful, the U.S. Coast Guard announced the discovery of a debris field in the underwater search area.

In a personal statement on Facebook, Guillermo Sohnlein, a friend of the CEO of OceanGate and the pilot of the submersible, expressed his belief in a longer survival window and encouraged people to remain hopeful.

The submersible initially had 96 hours of emergency oxygen, but Sohnlein believes the crew may have extended their supplies through relaxation.

Sohnlein mentioned a past rescue in which two pilots were trapped 480 meters underwater and were successfully rescued after 76 hours, highlighting the possibility of a successful rescue in this situation.

He also shared his co-founder role in OceanGate and praised the CEO’s passion for exploring the Titanic wreckage and collecting data on the wreck.

Sohnlein emphasized that these were his personal comments and not an official statement from OceanGate, which has faced criticism and a lawsuit over safety concerns.

The search for the missing submersible and its crew has captivated the country, with no contact since Sunday and reports of banging noises near the search area.

Captain David Marquet, a former Navy submarine commander, remains hopeful for the families but acknowledges the challenges of surviving at the bottom of the ocean.
