Union Bosses on the Tube Strikes

Mick Lynch, general secretary of the RMT, has stated that the upcoming strikes will effectively “shut down the tube” and demonstrate the crucial importance of these workers. He expressed his discontent with Transport for London’s plans to cut 600 jobs and make changes to workers’ pension plans, deeming them unacceptable. Lynch called on London Mayor Sadiq Khan to align with the RMT and the London Underground staff in resisting the Tory Government’s damaging agenda for the city’s transport infrastructure.

Finn Brennan, Aslef’s full-time organiser on London Underground, revealed that the union is joining the Tube strikes not only in solidarity with the RMT but because the proposed changes would make it extremely challenging for drivers to maintain work-life balance. Brennan criticized London Underground management for attempting to push through detrimental changes despite opposition from trade unions. He highlighted specific concerns regarding changes to the attendance procedure, potentially limiting representation and appeal rights, as well as increasing the length of warnings for drivers. Additionally, Brennan mentioned the management’s aim to enforce “trains modernisation” that would disrupt drivers’ ability to organize their personal lives and implement an entirely flexible workforce, leading to job cuts and increased workloads. He emphasized the importance of protecting pensions, working conditions, and existing agreements.

Transport for London’s Response

Transport for London previously denied having any current proposals to modify pension arrangements and claimed to be exploring options to safeguard employment and prevent the need for additional working hours. However, following negotiations, the parties involved reached an agreement to refrain from making pension changes until after the upcoming general election. Glynn Barton, chief operating officer at TfL, expressed his satisfaction with the resolution and assured the public that discussions with trade unions will continue to address concerns and seek a mutually agreeable solution. The RMT has also announced that 20,000 rail workers across the UK will participate in strikes scheduled for July.
