Little League World Series Bound: El Segundo All-Stars Move Forward

The El Segundo all-star team is set to participate in the prestigious Little League World Series starting on Thursday. This is only the second time a team from Los Angeles County has made it to this event in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania since 1995.

El Segundo earned their spot in the World Series by defeating the all-star team from Bollinger Canyon Little League based in San Ramon. They secured a 3-1 victory in the championship game of the West Region Tournament, which took place at Al Houghton Stadium in San Bernardino. All three runs were scored in the first inning, with the first four batters reaching base. Brody Brooks doubled, followed by Louis Lappe’s single, and a wild pitch allowed Brooks to score. Lucas Keldorf then hit a double, bringing in Lappe and Jaxon Kalish.

Lappe, who started the game for El Segundo, had an impressive performance. He limited Bollinger Canyon, the Northern California champions, to five hits and only allowed a run in the fourth inning. Lappe struck out eight batters and walked only one. However, he had to be replaced due to reaching the 85-pitch limit. Kalish came in and successfully retired the only batter he faced, Mikey Wong, securing the save.

In their upcoming game on Thursday, El Segundo will face the all-star team from New Albany Little League, the champions of the Great Lakes Region, in a modified double-elimination tournament.

El Segundo has had an exceptional summer, winning 14 out of 15 games in four tournaments. Their only loss came in the opening game of the championship series of the Southern California State Tournament, where they were defeated 4-3 by the all-star team from Sherman Oaks Little League. However, El Segundo quickly bounced back and won the rematch later that day with a score of 3-2.

This is a historic moment for El Segundo as they are the first Los Angeles County team to win the West Region Tournament since 1994. In that year, the Northridge Little League all-star team emerged victorious and went on to win the U.S. championship, featuring future USC and NFL quarterback Matt Cassel.

During this time, only one other team from Los Angeles County has qualified for the Little League World Series. This occurred in 2021 when the Torrance Little League all-star team made it to the World Series, which was limited to U.S. teams due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In that year, both the champion and the runner-up from each of the eight U.S. regions advanced to the World Series.

In the history of the Little League World Series, teams from Los Angeles County have emerged victorious three times. The Granada Hills National Little League all-star team won in 1963, and the Long Beach Little League all-star teams secured victories in 1992 and 1993.
