Lessons From Barbie Land: Insights from Greta Gerwig

This article contains spoilers regarding the film Barbie. When I brought up the topic of Ken during my conversation with Greta Gerwig, the call mysteriously disconnected. Upon Gerwig’s return, she was unaware of the technical glitch and agreed that just mentioning Ken could cause some sort of trouble. In a joking manner, she said, “The world was like, I don’t care.”

However, the world seems to care a great deal about the movie that Ken is in. Barbie has exceeded expectations since its release in theaters, becoming the first studio comedy to earn over $100 million in its opening weekend and achieving the highest opening ever for a female director in North America. Audiences, many of whom dressed head-to-toe in pink, flocked to theaters, reportedly causing one theater to run out of concessions by Saturday evening.

Barbie’s grand debut marks Gerwig’s biggest box-office success as a director so far. Yet, the film aligns seamlessly with Gerwig’s body of work. Just like Lady Bird in 2017 and Little Women in 2019, Barbie delves deeply into the expression of femininity. Beyond the glitzy costumes and extravagant parties, Barbie tells a heartfelt, humanistic story that explores how products shape and reflect our identities.

However, Barbie goes beyond being just playful and thoughtful. It is a hilarious and often surreal spectacle that ultimately encompasses an earnest, feminist, and distinctly Gerwig-esque essence.

During our conversation on Friday morning, Gerwig expressed her uncertainty about how Barbie would be received. She anticipated feeling anxious throughout the day and preferred to discuss the movie rather than worry about its reception. We discussed the underlying themes in her films and the lessons Gerwig learned from her time with Barbie. And, yes, we eventually got to talking about Ken, much to the delight of his fans.
