Legendary Isley Brothers Founding Member Passes Away at 84: A Tribute to Their Enduring Legacy

Rudolph Isley, one of the founding members of the Isley Brothers, has passed away at the age of 84. He played a significant role in performing iconic rhythm and blues classics like “Shout” and “Twist and Shout,” as well as funky hits like “That Lady” and “It’s Your Thing,” as reported by the AP. In a statement released by an Isley Brothers publicist, Ronald Isley expressed his deep feelings and love for his brother, saying, “There are no words to express my feelings and the love I have for my brother. Our family will miss him. But I know he’s in a better place.” Ernie Isley, another brother, confirmed that Rudolph died peacefully in his sleep at his Chicago home, and there were no known health issues.

Originally from Cincinnati, Rudolph Isley started his singing career in church with his brothers, Ronald and O’Kelly. In the late 1950s, they gained recognition with their secularized gospel song “Shout.” This song became even more popular after it was featured in the toga party scene of the movie Animal House. The Isleys achieved further success in the early 1960s with the equally energetic “Twist and Shout,” a song loved by the Beatles, who used it as the closing track on their debut album and included it in their iconic 1965 concert at Shea Stadium.

Some of the Isley Brothers’ other hits include “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You),” which was later covered by Rod Stewart, and the Grammy-winning song “It’s Your Thing.” In the 1970s, after younger brothers Ernie and Marvin joined the group, they achieved even greater success with singles like “That Lady” and “Fight the Power (Part 1),” as well as multi-million selling albums such as “The Heat Is On” and “Go for Your Guns.” Rudolph Isley left the group in 1989 to become a Christian minister, following the sudden death of O’Kelly Isley three years earlier. In 1992, Rudolph Isley, along with his brothers, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
