American citizens in Belarus have been advised to promptly leave the country. Amid growing tensions, Lithuania has closed two of its six border crossings with Belarus, as reported by the AP. Officials have disclosed that some of the approximately 4,500 Wagner Group fighters in Belarus are stationed near the country’s borders with Poland and Lithuania. Currently, Poland has one open border crossing with Belarus, while Latvia has two. The alert issued on Monday stated, “The Polish, Lithuanian, and Latvian governments have indicated that further border crossing closures with Belarus are possible.”
“US citizens in Belarus are advised to leave immediately. It is recommended to depart through the remaining border crossings with Lithuania and Latvia or by plane,” stated the alert, noting that American citizens are not permitted to travel overland from Belarus to Poland—and should not travel from Belarus to Ukraine or Russia. The alert further cautioned Americans against traveling to Belarus, highlighting the Belarusian authorities’ involvement in Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine, the presence of Russian military forces in Belarus, the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, the potential for civil unrest, the risk of detention, and the limited capacity of the Embassy to assist US citizens residing in or traveling to Belarus.
