Lawyers claim that Sam Bankman-Fried’s imprisonment and limited food intake impair his trial preparedness

FTX founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, entered a plea of not guilty during his arraignment at a Manhattan court. However, his attorneys raised concerns about the conditions of his imprisonment, particularly the lack of vegan food provided and the limited access to necessary resources for trial preparation. Bankman-Fried, once regarded as a cryptocurrency genius, had his bail revoked earlier this month due to allegations of witness tampering. His attorneys argued that he requires access to computers, medication for concentration, and a more suitable diet. They expressed their frustrations during a hearing presided over by Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn. Bankman-Fried, who has been held in jail since August 12, has been denied access to the internet and a laptop. Furthermore, his attorney, Mark Cohen, highlighted the absence of his attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication, Adderall, which is essential for his concentration. Cohen also stressed the need for appropriate vegan accommodations for Bankman-Fried’s dietary preferences. While Judge Netburn stated that she couldn’t overturn previous rulings about computer access, she did express her intention to help secure the necessary medications and vegan diet for Bankman-Fried. Bankman-Fried has been charged with wire fraud and multiple conspiracy counts related to his alleged theft of billions of dollars in FTX customer deposits and various illegal activities. He was extradited from the Bahamas in December and has been in jail since his $250 million bail was revoked. Prior to his imprisonment, Bankman-Fried had been living under strict rules at his parents’ home in Palo Alto, California. Judge Lewis A. Kaplan ordered his incarceration after finding probable cause of attempted witness tampering. This conclusion was based on Bankman-Fried’s attempts to communicate with the FTX general counsel and his disclosure of private writings by his former girlfriend and ex-CEO of Alameda Research, Caroline Ellison. These writings were deemed malicious and intended to harm the subject.
