Lawyer who contested Trump’s defeat in 2020 forfeits legal license

Attorney Lin Wood, who gained prominence for his legal challenges to overturn Donald Trump’s loss in the 2020 election, has decided to retire from practicing law rather than face potential disbarment. Wood had been facing disciplinary action in multiple states for promoting Trump’s false claims of victory over Joe Biden.

In a letter posted on his Telegram account, Wood requested that his law license in Georgia be retired due to “disciplinary proceedings pending against me.” This move prohibits him from practicing law in Georgia or any other jurisdiction, and he cannot reapply for admission. Wood, who has been a licensed attorney in Georgia since 1977, has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The State Bar of Georgia website currently lists Wood as retired with no disciplinary infractions on his record. The Bar confirmed that it dismissed the two complaints against Wood. In a court filing, the Office of General Counsel stated that by preventing Wood from practicing law, the disciplinary action had achieved its goals of protecting the public and the integrity of the judicial system and legal profession.

During the aftermath of the 2020 election, Trump praised Wood for his efforts to challenge the election results. However, Trump’s campaign distanced itself from Wood at times. Despite numerous lawsuits filed by Wood and others to dispute the election outcome, the courts across the country rejected these allegations.

Georgia officials had been deliberating whether to disbar Wood for his actions and held a disciplinary trial earlier this year. Wood filed a lawsuit against the state bar in 2022, alleging that their request for a mental health evaluation violated his constitutional rights. However, a federal appeals court dismissed the ruling, stating that Wood failed to demonstrate “bad faith” behind the request.

In 2021, the Georgia secretary of state’s office launched an investigation into Wood’s residency when he voted early in person during the 2020 general election. The investigation was prompted by Wood’s announcement on Telegram that he had moved to South Carolina. Ultimately, officials determined that Wood did not violate Georgia election laws.

Several years ago, Wood relocated to South Carolina and purchased three former plantations worth over $16 million. In 2021, he ran for chairman of the South Carolina GOP, but was unsuccessful.

In May, a Michigan watchdog group filed a complaint against Wood and eight other lawyers aligned with Trump, accusing them of misconduct for challenging Biden’s 2020 election victory in Michigan. A court had previously determined that the attorneys’ lawsuit was an abuse of the legal system.

Wood has maintained that his only involvement in the Michigan lawsuit was offering his services to fellow attorney Sidney Powell as a seasoned litigator. Powell defended the lawsuit, stating that lawyers sometimes have to address “unpopular issues.”

Other attorneys connected to the efforts to support Trump after his election loss have encountered similar challenges. Attorney John Eastman, the architect of the strategy to have Vice President Mike Pence interfere with the certification of Biden’s victory, faces 11 disciplinary charges in the State Bar Court of California.
