The hit Netflix series Peaky Blinders’ production team has criticized Ron DeSantis for violating copyright laws. The Florida governor used a clip of Cillian Murphy’s character from the show without obtaining the necessary license or permission. The team expressed their disapproval through a statement.

July 5 (UPI) — The production team for the popular series Peaky Blinders has accused Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor, of copyright infringement. This follows DeSantis’ presidential campaign sharing a super-clip that criticizes former President Donald Trump for his alleged support of the LGBTQ community.

The video, lasting just over a minute, showcases Trump’s purported endorsement of various gay rights issues, as well as his promotion of “LGBTQ for Trump” shirts, his statement about Caitlyn Jenner being allowed to use the bathroom at Trump Tower, and his tweet celebrating Pride Month in 2019. Midway through the video, it transitions to a meme-filled, music-driven celebration of DeSantis’ actions in curtailing people’s rights in Florida.

In the video, snippets of Cillian Murphy as Thomas Shelby, the fictional leader of a ruthless British crime family in the 1920s, are shown smoking a cigarette, seemingly drawing a parallel between DeSantis’ leadership style and that of a criminal.

The video also includes quick scenes from other films, such as American Psycho, featuring Christian Bale as a murderous psychopath, and The Wolf of Wall Street, showcasing a scene that glorifies financial crimes.

In response to the unauthorized use of their content, the creators of Peaky Blinders, including Steven Knight, Cillian Murphy, Caryn Mandabach Productions, Tiger Aspect Productions, and Banijay Rights, issued a statement confirming that the footage of Thomas Shelby’s character in DeSantis’ campaign video was obtained without permission or an official license. They explicitly expressed their disapproval of the video’s narrative and stated that they do not support or endorse its content.

It remains uncertain whether the Peaky Blinders team plans to pursue legal action against the controversial politician. Interestingly, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck also recently criticized Trump for his unauthorized use of a clip from their new film, Air, in one of his campaign videos. The video featured over two minutes of Damon portraying Sonny Vaccaro, the sports marketing executive behind Nike’s Air Jordan shoe line.
