Lawsuit Targets San Antonio’s ‘Reproductive Justice Fund’ – Unveiling the Case

San Antonio Faces Lawsuit from Anti-Abortion Groups Over Reproductive Justice Fund

The city of San Antonio is being sued by anti-abortion groups over the recent implementation of a “Reproductive Justice Fund,” which allocated $500,000 to support reproductive health services and potentially aid in the costs of out-of-state abortions, as reported by The Texas Tribune.

According to a lawsuit obtained by the San Antonio Express-News, the anti-abortion groups are seeking to halt the city from using taxpayer money to support organizations involved in abortion travel or the provision of elective abortions for Texas residents.

The lawsuit, filed in Bexar County, highlights that it is considered a criminal offense in Texas to partake in conduct that procures a drug-induced abortion, even if the abortion is performed in another state as long as the procuring conduct occurs within Texas.

Additionally, it is stated in the lawsuit that providing monetary donations to organizations that violate Texas’ abortion laws by facilitating drug-induced abortions is also a crime. This means that any donation, regardless of intent, aids or abets the illegal activities of these organizations.

President of the San Antonio Family Association, Michael Knuffke, who is part of the suing groups, referred to donating money to abortion funds that arrange out-of-state abortions for Texas residents as a criminal offense. Knuffke asserted that they will expose the criminal activities of these organizations and take legal action against both their affiliates and donors under state law and the Texas Heartbeat Act, as specified in a press release.

The Hill has reached out to the mayor and city manager of San Antonio for comment.
