A Texas family is suing a mortuary in Houston for $1 million after claiming in a lawsuit that their deceased loved one was dropped by two workers, resulting in dents in his head.

The Daily Beast was the first to report on the lawsuit, which alleges mishandling of the body of Juan “Chuco” Mejia, a postal worker who passed away at the age of 69. The family states that the incident caused them “severe mental anguish” according to a complaint seen by Insider.

Twinwood Mortuary and the family’s lawyers have not responded to Insider’s request for comment.

The family recounts that on June 14, 2021, after Mejia’s passing, they were informed that the mortuary service would collect their loved one. Two men arrived that night, but the family noticed they appeared young and unsure. The lawsuit also alleges that the two were not licensed funeral directors.

Despite offers of assistance, the family claims the workers refused and declined to call for additional help. They proceeded to move Mejia, who was on a metal stretcher with a white cloth, out of the condo “feet first.”

As the pair left, the family closed the door and heard a series of thumps. The family member William Mejia went outside to find his father’s head, shoulder, and upper body exposed on the public courtyard cement. He had to ask the workers for help in getting his father back on a wheeled stretcher and injured himself in the process. The workers immediately apologized.

When the family later contacted Twinwood about the incident, they were informed that the workers denied dropping Mejia.

During the wake, family members noticed “denting and bruising on Juan Mejia’s head from being dropped on the ground by the employees who transported him,” according to the complaint.

The family filed the lawsuit exactly two years after their father’s death, accusing negligence and gross negligence.
