Investigation of Sex Crimes in London Initiated by Police Following Russell Brand’s Allegations

London police are currently investigating allegations of historical sexual offenses in the U.K. following accusations made by several women against actor Russell Brand, accusing him of rape and sexual assault.

In a statement issued on Monday, London’s Metropolitan Police said, “Following an investigation by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times, the Met has received a number of allegations of sexual offences in London.” Although the statement did not explicitly mention Russell Brand, recent joint investigations by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4 Dispatches have shed light on the alleged assaults. recently published a joint investigation into alleged assaults carried out by the actor.

The statement from the police further stated, “We have also received a number of allegations of sexual offences committed elsewhere in the country and will investigate these. The offences are all historical in nature.”

The investigation conducted by various U.K. media outlets featured multiple women who came forward with accusations of sexual assault and rape against Russell Brand. One of the women claimed that Brand forcefully inserted his penis into her throat when she was only 16 years old.

Prior to the release of these allegations, Brand denied the claims and stated on X (formerly known as Twitter) that although he was “promiscuous,” all of his relationships were “always consensual.”

In a video posted on X last Friday, Brand briefly addressed the allegations but mainly criticized the British government and tech platforms for censoring his content.

“Obviously, it has been an extraordinary and distressing week, and I greatly appreciate your support and your questioning of the information presented to you,” Brand expressed in the video.

As a result of these accusations, the BBC has removed some of Russell Brand’s shows from its streaming service, and YouTube has blocked the comedian from earning money on its platform. Additionally, Brand has been dropped as a client by Tavistock Wood Management.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy is leading the investigation into sexual crimes in the U.K.

Furphy stated, “We continue to encourage anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a sexual offence, regardless of how long ago it occurred, to contact us.
