Lawmakers’ concerns lead to delay in Amazon’s telehealth expansion

Amazon’s plans to expand its telehealth services have been delayed due to concerns raised by Democratic lawmakers. According to a source familiar with the matter, the launch of the expanded Amazon Clinic services will be postponed for approximately three weeks. Initially, Amazon was set to announce the expansion to all 50 states on Tuesday, but the promotional campaign has now been rescheduled for July 19.

Currently, Amazon Clinic operates in 33 states and offers a convenient online platform for seeking treatment for common conditions. However, the service does not accept health insurance or government entitlement programs, instead charging a flat fee starting at $30.

Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Peter Welch expressed their concerns about the privacy of users’ health data. In a letter to Amazon executives, the lawmakers referenced a recent investigation by The Washington Post, which highlighted the extensive rights users must sign away to access Amazon Clinic services.

Warren and Welch requested Amazon’s response to their concerns by June 30. However, a spokesperson for Amazon denied any delay as a result of the lawmakers’ inquiry and asserted that Amazon Clinic has robust privacy policies in compliance with HIPAA and other regulations.

The Hill has reached out to Warren’s and Welch’s offices for comment.
