Landmark Lawsuit: Anti-Affirmative Action Group Takes Legal Action against Naval Academy

An anti-affirmative action group has recently filed a federal lawsuit against the US Naval Academy, aiming to prevent the consideration of race in the selection process for incoming cadets. The group, Students for Fair Admissions, led by 72-year-old conservative activist Edward Blum, achieved a major victory when the Supreme Court ruled in June to eliminate affirmative action in college admissions. However, the ruling allowed military service academies, such as the Naval Academy, to continue using race as a factor in their admissions process, as reported by the Washington Post.

Edward Blum, in a statement to Reuters, claimed that the Naval Academy lacks any legal grounds for treating midshipman applicants differently based on their race or ethnicity. During the Supreme Court case, US Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar argued that achieving diversity within the officer corps is crucial for national security and that race-conscious admissions remain essential for service academies to attain this diversity. The Naval Academy abstained from commenting on the ongoing litigation, according to Axios. Moreover, Students for Fair Admissions is actively seeking potential plaintiffs for a case against the Air Force Academy, as reported by the New York Times.
