Kyiv Drone Attack Leaves Five Injured—Largest Strike on Ukraine Yet

Russia conducted its largest drone attack of the war on Saturday, releasing a total of 75 drones on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. The attack, which started in the early hours and lasted for six hours, resulted in five injuries and widespread damage. The intensity of the attack and the timing, on a day commemorating Ukraine’s worst tragedy – the 1932-33 Holodomor famine, sent shockwaves across the city.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister reported that Russia had carried out 911 attacks in the past week alone, killing 19 people and injuring 84. The attack, according to Minister Dmytro Kuleba, is part of Russia’s deliberate attempt to destroy Ukraine and its people.

Despite the scale of the attack, Ukraine’s air force managed to shoot down the majority of the drones using ‘mobile fire’ units, with only one drone remaining in the air after the six-hour attack. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the attack had injured five people, including an 11-year-old girl, and damaged buildings across the city. He also stated that a fire in a children’s nursery was started by a downed drone fragment.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the attack, especially for its timing on the day of Ukraine’s commemoration of the Holodomor famine. He accused the Russian leadership of engaging in “wilful terror” and claimed Russia is proud of its capability to cause harm.

The target of the attack remains unclear, but with Ukraine warning of Russia’s intentions to destroy its energy system, the campaign is concerning for the country’s energy infrastructure. The attack left nearly 200 buildings, including 77 residential ones, without power, signaling a potential prelude to the winter season. Acquire Licensing Rights.
