Kuwait Announces Distribution of 100,000 Copies of the Quran in Sweden, Responding to the Desecration Incident During a Single Protest

Kuwait has recently announced plans to print and distribute thousands of copies of the Quran in Swedish, as a means to educate the Swedish population on Islamic values and the importance of coexistence. This action comes in response to the desecration of a Quran during an authorized anti-Islam protest in Stockholm last month.

The Prime Minister of Kuwait, Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, stated that the Public Authority for Public Care will be responsible for printing and distributing 100,000 translated copies of the Quran in Sweden. The aim is to promote tolerance and coexistence among all individuals, as stated by the country’s state news agency Kuna.

The incident that sparked this response occurred on June 28, when a 37-year-old Iraqi Christian, Salwan Momika, threw a copy of the Quran into the air and burned some of its pages outside the Stockholm Central Mosque. This act took place on the first day of Eid-al-Adha, a significant festival in the Islamic calendar, and resulted in widespread anger among Muslims worldwide. Protests were held in various Muslim nations, including Iraq, where demonstrators stormed the Swedish embassy compound.

CBS News contacted the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for comment on Kuwait’s initiative, but no response was received at the time of publication. The United States State Department condemned the desecration of the Quran in Stockholm. However, they acknowledged that Swedish authorities were within their rights to authorize the small protest.

In the words of State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, “We believe that demonstration creates an environment of fear that will impact the ability of Muslims and members of other religious minority groups from freely exercising their right to freedom of religion or belief in Sweden. We also believe that issuing the permit for this demonstration supports freedom of expression and is not an endorsement of the demonstration’s actions.”

The United Nations Human Rights Council recently adopted a resolution condemning the burning of the Quran as an act of religious hatred. While a majority of countries supported the resolution, the United States and some European nations voted against it. These dissenting votes were based on their perspectives on human rights and freedom of expression.

Overall, Kuwait’s initiative to print and distribute copies of the Quran in Sweden aims to promote understanding and tolerance between different cultures and religious communities. By educating the Swedish population on Islamic values, it strives for a more harmonious and inclusive society.
