Kremlin Releases Executive Order Mandating Possible Loyalty Oath for Wagner Mercenaries

The Kremlin has recently issued an executive order that introduces the possibility of requiring members of the Wagner Group to pledge allegiance to Russia. This development follows the reported demise of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Group, earlier this week. It is believed that Russia has been actively working to dismantle the group since their failed uprising against the Kremlin two months ago.

According to a statement posted on the Kremlin’s website, individuals joining volunteer units or making contributions to fulfill the objectives of the Russian Armed Forces will be required to take an oath to the State Flag of the Russian Federation. Furthermore, the order also applies to personnel from other troops and military units, as specified in the Federal Law On Defense, who participate in special military operations. It extends to individuals employed by state enterprises established under the law governing the regulation of arms and security, as well as those involved in territorial defense.

The inclusion of the term “special military operation” in the post seems to be alluding to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as initially referred to by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
