Kim Jong Un directs North Korean military to strengthen war plans

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered the military to enhance its war plans in response to increasing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, as the United States and South Korea prepare for joint military drills, according to state media reports.

Kim chaired a meeting of the country’s central military commission, where he urged the army to be fully prepared for war and to establish offensive military countermeasures to deter adversaries, as stated by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The KCNA report highlighted that the country’s adversaries are becoming more overt in their reckless military confrontation with North Korea.

Kim has been critical of the U.S. and South Korea’s war drills, using them as a basis to accelerate its weapons demonstrations. Since early 2022, Pyongyang has conducted over 100 missile launches.

During the meeting, Kim signed an order implementing important unspecified military measures and called for increased war preparations, including the acquisition of more powerful strike capabilities and the conduct of actual war drills, according to state media.

State media photos of the meeting showed Kim pointing to areas on a blurred map of the Korean Peninsula, which seemed to correspond to the metropolitan region surrounding Seoul, the capital of South Korea, and the area around Daejeon, the location of South Korea’s army headquarters.

Additionally, Kim removed Gen. Pak Su II from the position of Chief of the General Staff and appointed Vice Marshal Ri Yong Gil as his replacement, according to KCNA. Ri previously served as chief of general state, a position of significance, according to Cheong Seong-Chang, a senior analyst at South Korea’s Sejong Institute.

A spokesperson for South Korea’s Foreign Ministry, Ahn Eun-jun, criticized North Korea for prioritizing war readiness discussions over addressing the needs of its impoverished population.

Lee Sung Joon, spokesperson for South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated that U.S. and South Korean intelligence authorities are closely monitoring North Korea’s weapons development activities.

In conclusion, North Korea under Kim Jong Un’s leadership is intensifying its military preparedness amid rising tensions. The situation calls for close observation by international intelligence agencies, as the region remains on high alert.
