Kids are at real risk due to the recent attack by UFT on Success Academy charters

The teachers union, with the support of a procrastinating judge, is once again jeopardizing the education of children by trying to prevent the opening of two Success Academy charter schools on Monday. Eva Moskowitz, the founder of Success Academy, deserves praise for her determination to open the schools as planned in order to protect students. Late Wednesday night, the union sought an emergency order from a judge to stop Success Academy from opening the buildings in the Rockaways, Queens, and Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, as part of a lawsuit filed in March. The union argues that the city’s Department of Education approved the co-location of the schools without considering the impact of a new state law on class sizes. However, this claim is baseless, as the buildings have enough space for all students without exceeding the new caps, and enrollments have actually been declining. Additionally, the caps will only gradually come into effect, allowing ample time for adjustments if necessary. The United Federation of Teachers’ lawsuit is just another step in their ongoing war against charter schools, which started before any charter schools even existed in New York. The union fears the competition, as charter school students, especially those at Success Academy, consistently outperform students at traditional public schools. Meanwhile, the judge overseeing the case, Lyle Frank, has been aware of the planned school openings for months but has yet to make a decision. The union is now claiming that preparations by the charter schools have caused “harms” and “safety concerns” that warrant an immediate temporary injunction. This is simply more nonsense from the union. The union knows that if a decision is not made, the schools will open as planned, and this is something they cannot accept. Success Academy has completed all necessary preparations and has even held orientation sessions. Parents, students, and teachers all expect to start the new school year on Monday. The teachers union wants these children to suffer and fail. If these students were forced to attend public middle school in the Rockaways, they would be in classrooms where only a third of the students were proficient in math and reading last year. In comparison, 80% of Success Academy students excelled in reading and 75% in math. The UFT’s actions are not only outrageous, but the judge also bears responsibility for not dismissing this case sooner. He could greatly benefit parents, students, and staff by allowing Success Academy to open before Monday.
