Inspiring Young Artists: Bituin Escalante’s Impact as a Judge

Singer-actress Bituin Escalante finds joy in her role as a judge in the “Tawag ng Tanghalan” segment of “It’s Showtime.” She sees it as an opportunity to inspire others to pursue their dreams. However, Bituin also believes in being critical of the judges’ decisions. She wants to prevent negative comments from affecting young artists’ confidence, as she understands the pain it can cause. Bituin values the chance to share her experiences and help aspiring artists, even though her own career may fluctuate.

Bituin appreciates the crossover of talents from GMA and ABS-CBN on “It’s Showtime.” She doesn’t feel pressure from the network war and finds it exciting to see artists from both companies working together. She describes the industry as healthy, friendly, and supportive despite the occasional name-calling.

Bituin is glad to see mainstream artists like Piolo Pascual, Bea Alonzo, Jericho Rosales, and Paulo Avelino exploring theater. She believes their participation introduces a new audience to the art form. Bituin sees positive changes in the industry and shares the hunger she observes in these actors who want to do more theater.

Bituin is also part of the film “Ang Duyan ng Magiting,” directed by Dustin Celestino Jose, for the 2023 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. She describes the movie as a story of self-examination and realizing what one is truly fighting for. Bituin emphasizes that unity begins with confronting oneself. In the film, she portrays a lawyer who used to be idealistic but becomes more pragmatic over the years. Bituin relates to her character’s disillusionment and decision-making that focuses on personal interests.

As an artist, Bituin recognizes her influence but acknowledges her limitations. She believes in speaking up and discussing her opinions, although sometimes impulsively. However, she emphasizes that the focus should always be on those in power, not on individual artists. Bituin has previously worked on a Cinemalaya film, “Pepot Artista,” and she expresses her satisfaction in choosing to participate in “Ang Duyan ng Magiting,” assuring that it translates the director’s good writing into a remarkable film.

The 19th Cinemalaya will take place until August 13th at the PICC in Pasay City.
