Kevin Plank, the founder of Under Armour, heeded Stephanie Ruhle’s advice

Under Armour’s founder Kevin Plank had an unconventional relationship with television anchor Stephanie Ruhle, court records reveal. The records, filed in connection with a shareholder lawsuit, show that Ruhle advised the company during times of negative coverage. This relationship previously garnered media attention in 2019. In 2016, when Under Armour faced a downgrade in its stock, Ruhle asked for data to counter the report and suggested sending it to media outlets. The filings also show that Plank provided Ruhle with information and arranged interviews with prominent figures. Ethical questions arise regarding the boundaries between reporters and the subjects they cover. In depositions, Plank referred to Ruhle as a “confidant” and someone he seeks counsel from. Ruhle admitted to flying on Plank’s private jet and using a phone specifically for their communications. Under Armour stated that the documents have no bearing on the shareholder lawsuit and that the claims are meritless. MSNBC and Bloomberg declined to comment on the matter.
