Barrett Claims She Has Developed Resilience on SCOTUS

Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who joined the Supreme Court as one of Donald Trump’s three nominees nearly three years ago, recently discussed the increasing criticism the court has been facing. Speaking at a judicial conference in Wisconsin, Barrett stated that as public figures, justices and judges should expect public criticism as part of their job (source: CNN). The conference, hosted by Diane Sykes, the chief judge of the 7th US Circuit Court, provided a platform for Barrett to address these issues (source: Washington Post).

Barrett, 51, acknowledged her transition from being a law professor at the University of Notre Dame to a major public figure. She expressed having developed a “thick skin” over the past couple of years, emphasizing that it is a requirement for all judges and public figures alike. Questions regarding reports of ethics rule violations by other justices and calls for the Supreme Court to adopt a code of conduct were not raised during the interview with Sykes. Barrett also shared an anecdote from her time as a law clerk, recalling that visitors to the Supreme Court would sometimes ask for directions because they didn’t recognize the justices (source: AP).

Reflecting on her role as a justice, Barrett expressed the belief that justices should not be easily recognized by the public. Despite the strong ideological differences among the justices, she highlighted the existence of “warm personal relations” on the court and an effort to accommodate one another. Barrett also shared a heartwarming gesture from liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who provided personalized Halloween bags for Barrett’s children when she joined the court in 2020.
