According to a filing reviewed by Insider, the lawyers stated, “Petitioner has shown a concerning pattern in recent months, both prior to and after their separation, of taking Respondent’s belongings without his knowledge or consent, especially since the commencement of this case.” They claim that Christine Baumgartner, Costner’s ex-wife, charged $25,000 in legal expenses to a credit card provided for household expenses and took undisclosed cash advances on the card without Costner’s knowledge.
The filing also suggests that Baumgartner may have been preparing for the divorce well in advance, as she purchased an expensive vehicle for her personal use, which is likely permitted under their prenuptial agreement. Previously, the couple had leased their vehicles, and the specific details of the vehicle Baumgartner purchased remain unclear.
Costner’s lawyers argue that these actions indicate she had planned her departure long before informing Costner in April 2023. They believe this demonstrates her awareness that the terms of their prenuptial agreement would play a significant role in their separation proceedings.
